In response to the government’s GP Forward View Policy, our CCG has introduced the need for practices across the locality (St Albans and Harpenden) to provide ‘Extended Access Appointments’. This is in response to David Camerons pledge/ directive that ‘all GP surgeries should be open from 8am until 8pm in the evenings and at weekends’. Easier said than done Mr Cameron, and subsequently Mrs May!
So, what does this mean to our patients and others in St Albans and Harpenden? Well, the idea is that our patients along with all others in our locality are able to access, routine doctor and nurse appointments outside of the normal 8.30am to 6.30pm day. Not all these appointments will be at Davenport House or with a Davenport House doctor/nurse but they will be at a surgery within the St Albans and Harpenden area and with a GP/nurse who usually works in this area. Appointments are available across the locality between 7-8am and 6.30-8pm Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings.
Here at Davenport we are offering pre-bookable appointments between 7am and 8am on Tuesday mornings, and from 6.30pm to 8pm every Tuesday evening. We are also offering appointments on 3 out of 4 Saturdays each month between 8am and 1pm with a GP, Helen, our Advanced Nurse Practitioner or with one of our nurses. Please call to check dates & availability.
This system was trialled locally between January and March and its success meant that it went live on the 1st April. Since then coverage has reached 40% and it is hoped that 100% coverage will be achieved by the end of September.
